We have been very busy this week....we're not sure if we will ever have a week where we won't say that. One of the items on our list of things to do was a visit to the Farmer's Market. We went early in the morning so that we would have a great selection of fruit and veggies to choose from. It can be very busy because the variety is amazing and so things go quickly. We loaded up and should now be able to make salads and fruit plates for a good while. We also got some nice peppers and onions that we can use in stir-fry's and omelets. We hung our onions on our back porch because they sell them in a bunch that is braided together. In fact, much of the fruit here is sold clumped together on the branch. Here is a picture of Maria Blanco at her home with some fruit that she bought at the market. It is ready to be put on a hook so that she can just twist or cut off the fruit as she needs it. Back to the market...... It is interesting to see the fruit that is native to this area. We have tried most of the "exotic" fruit but we still see some that make us stop and think...."What is that?"
Mike was getting a little hungry for some breakfast so he bought a plate of "gallo pinto" from a lady at the market. It is a mixture of rice and beans that is the typical breakfast in Costa Rica. It is tradition to also eat "casado" plates that include gallo pinto for lunch or dinner. As most Latin American countries....Costa Ricans can't go a day without eating their beans and rice. It is pretty tasty here!He had to wait a few minutes while she made a fresh tortilla for him and cooked it up.....We grabbed our things and headed home. I wonder what great veggies and fruit we will find next time.....
